Turbo Volvo V70: from the five-cylinder petrol engines of the 1990s to the four-cylinder D3 of the later series, references are not interchangeable

The V70 spanned three generations and featured very different engine architectures, making turbo identification particularly tricky. An owner looking for a turbo for their 2.4 petrol engine may find themselves faced with three distinct engine codes — B5234T3, B5244T or B5254T — depending on whether their V70 produces 193 hp or 237 hp, with manufacturer references that do not overlap. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier; engine capacity alone is not sufficient.

Petrol: two five-cylinder families, distinct turbos

The 2.0 T5 (code B4204T11) is a four-cylinder 2.0 l unit, not to be confused with the five-cylinder 2.3 and 2.4 engines. The latter come in two power outputs — 193 hp and 237 hp — with turbo references specific to each configuration. On petrol blocks, the turbo operates at fixed geometry with a wastegate; the most common failure symptoms are a whistling noise under load, a drop in boost pressure when the revs rise, and progressive oil consumption, often linked to worn turbine shaft seals. Before any replacement, checking the condition of the turbo oil feed line is essential: a partially blocked feed pipe is frequently the root cause of turbo failure.

Diesel: D5 and D3, four engine codes that must not be mixed up

On the diesel side, the 2.4 D5 and the 2.4 D share the codes D5244T, D5244T2 and D5244T5, each associated with its own turbo reference. The 2.0 D3, meanwhile, comes in two power outputs — 136 hp and 163 hp — under the codes D5204T2 and D5204T3. Both codes appear across the two D3 engines listed in this guide: power output alone is not enough to select the correct reference — it is the engine code that is decisive. On variable-geometry diesel blocks, a faulty actuator or a coked-up turbo assembly are common causes of limp-home mode.
