Why might the turbo on your Classe A 220 CDI fail?

On the Mercedes Classe A fitted with the OM 651.930 diesel engine, the turbocharger is put under particular strain during sustained acceleration and trips with widely varying loads. Turbo failures have been reported from as early as 80000 km on this engine, often linked to cooling issues. Insufficient engine oil quality, oil changes carried out too late, a clogged air filter or a poorly maintained cooling circuit all accelerate wear on the turbo's bearings and rotor. Localised overheating — noticeable at the cooling fan after the engine is switched off — can fatigue the turbo without leaving any immediately visible leak. Driving too harshly from cold, before the engine has reached operating temperature, is also a frequent cause of premature failure.

Fitting advice for the turbo on your Classe A 220 CDI

Before fitting, check the entire lubrication circuit: oil feed and return hoses, the oil pump and its strainer, to rule out any risk of oil starvation on the new turbo. Also check the intake hoses, the intercooler and the air intake for any leaks or blockages. When starting up for the first time, remember to prime the oil circuit before the initial start to prevent the turbo from running dry for a few seconds. Checking the oil pressure and flow rate is recommended, particularly on a vehicle that already has a high mileage.

  • Check the lubrication hoses (oil feed and return)
  • Inspect the boost circuit (hoses, intercooler, air intake)
  • Replace the air filter and crankcase breather
  • Prime the oil circuit before starting
