Why does the turbo on the Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Turbo fail?

On the Subaru Legacy fitted with the 2.5 GT Turbo petrol engine, turbocharger failure is most commonly caused by a lubrication fault: oil that has not been changed often enough, is contaminated, or has the wrong viscosity, which rapidly degrades the turbine shaft bearings. A clogged air filter or a damaged air intake can also allow abrasive particles to be ingested, causing premature wear to the compressor wheels. Prolonged spirited driving without allowing the engine to cool down before switching off can also accelerate oil coking in the centre housing, leading to turbo seizure.

New Turbo for the Subaru Legacy: Compatibility and Reference

This new turbo is compatible with the VF52 reference, designed for the Subaru Legacy fitted with the 2.5 GT Turbo petrol engine — a turbocharged flat-four with a 2500 cm³ capacity. Before placing an order, it is strongly recommended that you check the reference number on the old turbo or on the vehicle's identification plate, as running changes over the production years may have affected cross-references depending on the model year.

Exchange Basis and Warranty on This New Turbo

This new turbo for the Subaru Legacy is sold on an exchange basis: the old turbo must be returned, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions. It is only collected after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted, so your vehicle is not left off the road. A 12-month parts warranty applies, provided fitting is carried out by a qualified professional. Payment can be spread over several instalments, in up to 10 instalments.

Advice Before Fitting the Turbo on the Legacy 2.5 GT

Before fitting this new turbo, check the condition of the oil circuit: the feed pipe, return pipe and oil galleries must be clean and unobstructed to ensure correct lubrication from the moment the engine starts. Also check the condition of the air intake, air filter and intercooler, to eliminate any risk of foreign object ingestion or abnormal boost pressure. When starting the engine for the first time, it is essential to pre-lubricate the new turbo with oil before cranking the engine, in order to prevent the bearings from running dry during the first few seconds of operation.
