Symptoms of a failing turbo on the Volvo V40 2.0 D2/D3
On the Volvo V40 fitted with a 2.0 D2 or D3 engine, a turbo that is nearing the end of its life often makes itself known through a gradual loss of power under acceleration, an unusual whistling noise from under the bonnet, blue or black exhaust smoke, and an engine warning light on the dashboard. Excessive fuel consumption or sluggish performance — particularly when pulling away — should also alert the driver of a V40 used for long journeys or heavy urban driving.
Compatibility of the turbo for the Volvo V40
This new turbo is compatible with reference 836264-5001S and fits Volvo V40 models powered by the 2.0 D2 (120 ch) and 2.0 D3 (150 ch) diesel engines of 1969 cm³, identified in particular by engine codes D4204T13, D4204T8, D4204T20, D4204T4, D4204T9 and D4204T16. Before placing an order, we recommend checking the reference printed on your old turbo or on the vehicle's registration document to ensure perfect compatibility with your Volvo V40.
Exchange and warranty for this Volvo V40 turbo
This new turbo is sold on an exchange basis: in accordance with our Terms and Conditions, return of the old turbo is required, but it is only collected after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted, so your Volvo V40 is never left off the road unnecessarily. A 12-month parts warranty applies, subject to fitting being carried out by a qualified professional. Payment can be spread over multiple instalments, in up to 10 instalments.
Fitting advice for the Volvo V40 turbo
Before fitting this new turbo to the 2.0 D2 or D3 engine of your V40, carefully check the oil circuit, the condition of the hoses and the air intake: residual metal particles or a blocked hose can damage the new turbo within the first few engine revolutions. Engine oil quality, adherence to oil change intervals and the condition of the air filter are the main causes of premature turbo failure on this type of diesel engine. Also check the intercooler and its circuit for any air leaks. When starting up for the first time, pre-priming the turbo with oil before the initial start ensures immediate lubrication of the bearings and prevents any dry running.
