L200 gearbox: before and after the switch to the 4N15 – two generations, two distinct weak points

On the L200, the most significant technical divide falls between the 4D56 / 4D56T and the 4N15 : two engines, two manually-operated gearboxes of entirely different design. The 4D56 and 4D56T, fitted to variants covering the period 2005 à 2015, come with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 4N15, introduced later, is paired with a 6-speed manual. These two units are not interchangeable: a single incorrect engine code is enough to order a completely unusable part.

Known weak points and the symptoms that trigger replacement

The 5-speed gearbox on the 4D56 is well known for difficult engagement of 1st and 2nd gear, particularly noticeable when cold or after heavy off-road use. Wear to the selector forks and synchromesh rings shows itself as jerky gear changes, a crunching noise when selecting lower gears and, in more advanced cases, a complete refusal to engage the gear. Heavy-load use or off-road towing — both common on this pick-up — accelerates this deterioration. The 6-speed gearbox on the 4N15 is more recent and has less field history, but the same mechanical stresses apply whenever the vehicle is used at maximum load or towed frequently.
