The Classe A, an urban car subjected to intensive use, puts its turbo through short, repeated thermal cycles

Designed for city driving, the Classe A strings together short journeys: the engine rarely reaches a stable operating temperature, oil circulates less effectively through the turbo's lubrication circuit, and the engine is frequently switched off immediately after being under load. This usage profile — brief bursts of high revs followed by incomplete cool-down — accelerates the degradation of the bearings and promotes oil coking at the CHRA. When a Classe A turbo fails, the lubrication circuit must therefore be inspected and the root cause addressed before fitting a new unit, otherwise the problem is likely to recur quickly.

Diesel: several distinct engine blocks, with references that do not cross over

The Classe A diesel range spans several generations of engine blocks: the OM 640 (codes 640.940 and 640.942) is fitted to the 160 CDI and 180 CDI of the older generation, with variable geometry and cross-references under the prefixes VV16 and VF40A281. The OM 651.930 covers the 220 CDI. The OM 654 (654920) covers the 220 d 190/194 hp, with its own references such as 6540900880 or A6540908400. The OM 608.915 and the OM 607 serve the 180 d and the A 160 d / A 180 d variants respectively, including the K9K for certain versions. None of these blocks share a compatible turbo: the engine code stamped on the block — not the engine capacity alone — is the only reliable means of identification.

    Petrol: the M 270 and M 282 blocks on the 160, 180, 200, 220 and 250

On the petrol side, the M 270.910 and M 270.920 cover the majority of the 160, 180, 200, 220 and 250 models, with long reference series (prefixes 2700900080, 2700902780 and their A-prefixed equivalents). The M 282.914 corresponds to a more recent variant of the 180 petrol. On these fixed-geometry turbocharged engines with a wastegate, the most common failure symptoms are persistent blue smoke when hot, an unusual whistling at idle, or a gradual loss of power. All turbos listed on this page are new parts.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Mercedes Classe A Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Mercedes Classe A Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
