On the Trafic, the same 1.9 dCi or 2.0 dCi engine can require turbos with entirely different manufacturer references depending on the exact engine code

This is the most common pitfall with this vehicle: the 1.9 dCi comes in four power outputs (82, 100/101, 105 and 110 hp) and covers a family of F9Q engine codes with numerous variants — F9Q718, F9Q732, F9Q733, F9Q740, F9Q752, F9Q754, F9Q760, F9Q762. Each variant may correspond to a distinct manufacturer reference. Likewise, the 2.0 dCi is split between M9R codes (630, 692, 780, 782, 784, 786, 788) and M9T codes (670, 672, 676, 680, 686, 690, 692) — two engine families that do not share the same turbos. Going by engine capacity or stated power output alone will consistently lead to ordering errors;only the engine code stamped on the block, cross-referenced with the original manufacturer reference, makes it possible to identify the correct part.

Trafic engine families and their respective turbos

The 2.8 D and 2.8 TD (codes S9W700 and S9W702) are the oldest engines in the range; they use a fixed-geometry turbo with a wastegate. The 2.2 dCi 90 hp (G9T 720, 722, 750) represents an intermediate generation with its own references, notably 720244-5004S and its equivalents. The 1.6 dCi, fitted to the most recent versions of the Trafic III in 116, 120, 125, 140 and 145 hp outputs, is based on R9M codes (408, 413, 450, 452) and requires variable-geometry turbos that are entirely different from all other families. The turbos offered in this collection arebrand new exclusively, regardless of the engine.

Causes of failure and key checks before replacement

On the Trafic, turbos are particularly vulnerable to two causes: lubrication breakdown due to dirty oil or oil changed too infrequently, and fouling of the EGR circuit or diesel particulate filter, which creates back-pressure that damages the bearings and shaft seals. The classic symptoms — abnormal whistling under acceleration, blue or black exhaust smoke, gradual loss of power — do not always point to a purely mechanical turbo failure: a faulty actuator on variable-geometry versions, or an air leak in the intake circuit, can produce identical effects.Diagnosing and correcting the root cause before any replacement is essential to avoid premature failure of a new part.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Renault Trafic Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Renault Trafic Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
