Renault Laguna Turbos: from the 1.9 DTI to the dCi era – a 100% Diesel range with very distinct demands

The Laguna never received a turbocharged petrol engine within the scope covered here: the entire range is Diesel, which immediately directs identification towards the specific characteristics of this type of engine. Two engine families coexist, with very different turbo architectures. The older 1.9 DTI (codes F8Q 784, F8Q 786) use a fixed-geometry turbo with a mechanical wastegate: boost pressure is regulated by an exhaust bypass valve, with no movable vanes. The dCi generations — F9Q, G9T and M9R — switch to variable-geometry turbos (VGT): the pivoting vanes allow fine boost modulation at low revs, but expose the mechanism to fouling and corrosion of the actuator rods — a particular weakness on high-mileage engines or those with infrequent oil changes. Thermal stress is also higher on the larger-capacity units: the 2.2 dCi (G9T 700 to 707) and the 2.0 dCi (M9R 740) place greater demands on the bearings under sustained load than the 1.9 dCi.

1.9 dCi: a range of power outputs, not a single turbo

The 1.9 dCi comes in five power outputs — 92, 110, 116, 120 and 125 hp — corresponding to calibration variants and sometimes to turbos with different references. The F9Q engine codes cover a very wide spectrum (F9Q 650, 664, 670, 674, 680, 710, 716, 717, 722, 730, 731, 734, 736, 750, 758, 759, 800, 803, 804, 808, 812, 816): two vehicles showing the same power output can carry non-interchangeable turbos depending on the year of manufacture and the code stamped on the block. Checking the full engine code before placing any order is essential; power output alone is not sufficient to identify the correct reference.

Symptoms, causes and precautions before refitting

On the VGT units fitted to the F9Q and G9T, the most common symptoms are persistent black or blue smoke, a whistling noise under load, and the vehicle entering limp mode due to a boost pressure fault detected by the ECU. On the DTI, failure typically presents as an oil leak on the turbine side or a clear loss of power. In all cases, the root cause must be addressed before replacement: oil quality and pressure, the intake tract (presence of foreign bodies), the condition of the lubrication circuit, and any blockage caused by a clogged diesel particulate filter on the more recent generations. Fitting a new turbo to an engine whose underlying fault has not been rectified will invariably result in a repeat failure.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Renault Laguna Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Renault Laguna Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
