SsangYong diesel turbos have evolved across two distinct engine families, the D27DT and the D20DT

The SsangYong diesel range was built around two entirely separate engine families. The 2.7 Xdi (codes D27DT and D27DTP) is fitted to the Rexton in its early generations, as well as the Rodius and the Kyron, with 2 distinct power outputs (163 and 165 hp) corresponding to different turbo variants despite an identical engine capacity. The 2.0 Xdi (codes D20DT and D20DTR) came later, fitted to the Actyon and some second-generation Rexton models. These 2 engine families share no common parts on the turbocharger side: OEM references, geometries and flanges differ entirely.

D27DT, D27DTP, D20DT: why reference confusion is so common

On the 2.7 Xdi, the distinction between D27DT and D27DTP is critical. The D27DTP is a revised-boost-pressure variant, and its turbo carries specific OEM references (series 761433, SsangYong side 6640900780 and subsequent) that are incompatible with those of the standard D27DT (series 742289, references 6650900480 and subsequent). The A prefix on original references (A6640900480, A6650900780…) simply denotes reformatted SsangYong references: the part itself is physically identical. On the 2.0 Xdi, the series 54409880014 (references 6710900780 and equivalents) is specific to the D20DT and is not interchangeable with any 2.7 reference.

Common symptoms and causes to diagnose on these Xdi turbos

On both the 2.7 Xdi and the 2.0 Xdi, observed failures follow a recurring pattern: a high-pitched whistle under acceleration, blue or black smoke when the engine is hot, and a noticeable drop in power on pick-up. These engines are sensitive to the quality and regularity of oil changes: contaminated oil or a partially blocked lubrication circuit will rapidly damage the CHRA bearings and compromise turbine sealing. EGR fouling, which is common on these diesels in urban use, makes the problem worse. Before fitting a new turbo, it is essential to check the flow rate and cleanliness of the oil feed circuit as well as the condition of the return pipe: refitting the part without addressing these points will invariably lead to another failure.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your SsangYong.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my SsangYong?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
