Which turbo for a Volkswagen Crafter TDI: 2.5 or 2.0, and what engine code?

The answer comes down to two things: the engine generation and the engine code stamped on the identification plate — not simply the quoted power output. A Crafter 2.5 TDI 136 hp and a Crafter 2.0 TDI 136 hp take entirely different turbos, and within the 2.0 TDI, five power outputs — 109, 114, 122, 136 and 140 hp — exist alongside several distinct engine codes (CXFA, CXHA, CXHB, DAUA, DAUB, DAUC, DMZE, DNAE, CDBA, CNFA, CNFB, CKTB, CKTC, CSLA, CSLB, CSLC, CKUB, CKUC, CSNA), which multiplies the manufacturer references.

2.5 TDI: codes BJL, BJJ, BJK, BJM, CECA, CECB, CEBA, CEBB

The 2.5 TDI block was fitted to the first-generation Crafter in 88, 109, 136 and 163 hp outputs. These engines share a variable-geometry architecture with an integrated wastegate, but the references differ according to power output: the 49377-07440 family covers the lower-power versions (076145701B, 076145701E, 076145701F, 076145701H…), while the 136 and 163 hp versions call for the 49377-07515 or 49377-07535 family (076145701Q, 076145702C, 076145702D…). Mixing up the two families is the most common mistake on this generation. The 2.5 TDI is sensitive to degraded oil: the CHRA bearings deteriorate quickly if service intervals are exceeded under heavy loaded use.

2.0 TDI: a wide range of references to identify precisely

The second generation moved to the 2.0 TDI, with a power range spanning 109 to 163 hp. The variable-geometry turbos in this family come in several manufacturer references (04L253014A, 04L253014C, 04L253014F, 04L253014L, 04L253014M, 04L253014N, 04L253056R for the 873767 group; 03L253014A, 03L253014C for the 803955 group; 03L145701R, 03L145715B, 03L145715K, 03L145873A for the 10009880113 group). On a high-mileage van, a blocked diesel particulate filter and oil vapour from the crankcase breather are the primary causes of actuator and variable-geometry vane failure. Typical symptoms include a whistling noise under load, black or blue smoke, and a loss of power when accelerating under load.Identifying the root cause of the failure — oil circuit, blocked DPF, air intake — is essential before returning the unit to service, otherwise the replacement part will deteriorate rapidly. All turbos offered for the Crafter are new.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Volkswagen Crafter Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Volkswagen Crafter Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
