The 1.7 TD of the early models versus the 1.3 Multijet of later generations: two eras, two turbos with nothing in common

The Punto went through several decades with a profound change in its diesel engine line-up. The 1.7 TD belongs to the earliest versions, with engine codes from the 176 family, while later generations switched to the 1.3 JTD and then the 1.3 Multijet — families 188, 199, 223, 312 or 330 depending on the exact model year. These two families share absolutely no turbo components: the geometries, oil flanges and manufacturer references are entirely different.

A large number of engine codes for a 1.3 that evolved considerably

The 1.3 Multijet is the engine that demands the greatest care when it comes to identification. With more than twenty engine codes on record — from 199A2.000 à 312 B5.000 through A13DTC or Z13DTJ — the same quoted output of 75, 84, 90 or 95 hp can correspond to different turbo references. Power output alone is not enough: the engine code stamped on the block points directly to the correct manufacturer reference among the available equivalences.

New or reconditioned turbo: what the listing shows

For the 1.7 TD and the vast majority of 1.3 Multijet engines, the turbos on offer are new, sold without return of the old unit. Only the 1.3 Multijet 90 / 1.3 D Multijet 84 range has a reconditioned turbo available on an exchange basis. On the fault side, the 1.3 Multijet is prone to blockages in the oil feed line: a turbo replaced without first flushing the circuit and addressing the root cause — a clogged oil filter, degraded oil, or a fouled EGR — will fail again quickly. Persistent blue smoke, a whistling noise under acceleration, or a sharp drop in boost are the usual warning signs on this engine.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Fiat Punto Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Fiat Punto Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
