A versatile city car driven to its limits: which gearbox does your Punto need?

The Punto is a city car that racks up the kilometres in heavy urban and suburban use, often kept for many years by its owners. This usage profile — frequent starts, constant gear changes, and the first gear and reverse under permanent strain — wears out the synchromesh rings long before any other components. On 5-speed versions, difficulty engaging 1st and 2nd gear is a common sign that the gearbox is reaching the end of its life, regardless of the engine.

5 or 6 speeds depending on the engine, and engine codes to check

The Punto spans the period 1999–2018 with two gearbox families: 5-speed manual and 6-speed manual. The split is not arbitrary. The 1.2 — whether identified by engine codes 188A4000, 188A5000 or 199A4000, or by the 169A4000 in its 8v version — is fitted exclusively with a 5-speed gearbox. The 1.9 JTD (codes 188A2000, 188A7000) and the 1.4 (codes 350A1000, 843A1000) may be fitted with either, depending on the year and version. The 0.9 TwinAir (codes 199B6000, 312A2000) and the 1.3 Multijet (codes 188A9000, 199A2000, 199B4000) are fitted exclusively with the 6-speed. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable way to resolve any ambiguity on engines that can accept both configurations.

Petrol and diesel: separate gearboxes, not interchangeable

The 5-speed gearbox from the 1.2 petrol is not the same as the one fitted to the 1.9 JTD in 5-speed form: the torque ratings, bellhousings and gear ratios all differ. The same applies to the 6-speed units on the 1.4 petrol and the 1.3 Multijet diesel. Confusing the fuel type (petrol/diesel) or the year of production will result in a fitment incompatibility. On second- and third-hand examples — common with this model — the engine code may have been replaced during a previous engine swap: checking that the code matches the declared engine type will help avoid ordering errors.
