R9M or M9R: which engine code determines the gearbox for your Fiat Talento?

On the Fiat Talento (2016–2021), it is the engine code stamped on the block that determines the correct gearbox reference to order — not simply the engine capacity shown on the paperwork. The 1.6 Multijet carries the codes R9M, R9M410 or R9M413; the 2.0 Multijet is identified by M9R or M9R 710. These two diesel engine families are mechanically distinct and do not share the same gearbox, even though both use a 6-speed manual transmission.

1.6 Multijet: three code variants across four gearbox references

The 1.6 Multijet accounts for the vast majority of Talento vehicles on the road. The code R9M on its own denotes the general engine family, whereas R9M410 and R9M413 correspond to different power outputs or calibration variants. Before placing an order, it is essential to check the full code on the block or the vehicle registration document, as the gearboxes associated with each sub-variant are not interchangeable. The Talento shares this engine architecture with the Trafic III and the NV300 of the same generation, which can cause confusion when searching for the right part.

2.0 Multijet: the M9R — less common but not to be confused

The 2.0 Multijet with codes M9R or M9R 710 is fitted to a smaller proportion of the Talento range. This larger-capacity engine is typically associated with higher payload versions or the most powerful configurations. The 6-speed manual gearbox that matches it differs from the one used with the 1.6: mixing up the two engine code families is the most common mistake encountered in the workshop on this vehicle.
