On the Fiat Tipo, the 1.4 and the 1.4 T-Jet share the same engine capacity but do not take the same gearbox

This is the first pitfall to watch out for on this model: a Tipo fitted with the naturally aspirated 1.4 (engine code 843A1000) takes a 6-speed manual that is different from the one fitted to the 1.4 T-Jet (engine code 940B7000). The presence of the turbocharger changes the torque transmitted to the gearbox, which means the internal components are different. Ordering without checking the engine code stamped on the block risks receiving an incompatible unit, even if the engine capacity shown is the same.

Four engines, three gearbox families

The Tipo produced between 2016 and 2024 is available with four engines covered by the range. The 1.0 T-Jet (code 199B8000) is the only one to take a 5-speed manual; all other engines use a 6-speed manual. The 1.6 Multijet (code 55260384) is the exception in the range: it is the only engine offered with a DDCT (dual-clutch) gearbox in addition to the 6-speed manual. The DDCT is supplied with a new dual-clutch assembly, without the mechatronic unit.

Key points on the 1.6 Multijet DDCT

The 1.6 Multijet dual-clutch gearbox is a wet dual-clutch automated manual transmission. This type of gearbox is susceptible to wear of the internal hydraulic module under intensive urban use, with frequent low-speed judder. Before addressing the mechanical gearbox, it is advisable to check the condition of the mechatronic unit separately, as an electronic fault will not be resolved by replacing the mechanical part alone. Checking the engine code and transmission type on the registration document or manufacturer's label remains the most reliable way to avoid ordering errors on this model.
