How the engine affects your gearbox choice

The 1.0 T-Jet is the only engine in the range to come with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Both the naturally aspirated 1.4 and the 1.4 T-Jet use a 6-speed manual, but the references differ depending on the engine code. The 1.6 Multijet (engine code 55260384) is the only engine in the range to offer two types of transmission: a 6-speed manual and a DDCT (dual-clutch). The dual-clutch version is sold without the mechatronic unit but includes a new dual-clutch assembly — worth checking before you order if your mechatronic unit is also faulty.

Common symptoms on the Tipo by gearbox type

On manual versions, the most frequent issues reported are stiff gear changes or noises in 3rd and 4th gear, typically caused by worn synchromesh rings — a pattern seen on 1.4 models used in urban driving at high mileage. On the 1.6 Multijet in DDCT form, juddering at low speed and hesitation on pull-away are the most typical signs of a dual-clutch gearbox nearing the end of its life; these should be distinguished from a mechatronic unit fault before concluding that the mechanical gearbox itself needs replacing.
