2.0 TDI A3: from the 140 hp of the early generations to the current 30 TDI, the turbo is sold new in every case

Across this range, all turbos listed are brand-new parts sold as a straightforward purchase — there is no reconditioned option here, and no old unit to return. This shapes the decision straight away: if your turbo is mechanically salvageable and you want your own unit reconditioned, this collection is not the right starting point. On the other hand, if you need a fast restoration using a brand-new OEM-reference part, this is the place.

Finding the correct reference from the engine code

The 2.0 TDI A3 has spanned several engine generations and power outputs — from 110 to 184 hp — yet a single engine capacity does not correspond to a single turbo. Even at the same power output, the turbo reference changes depending on the engine code. For example, the 170 hp version covers engine codes BMN, BMR, BUY, BUZ, CBBB, CFGB depending on the generation, while the 140 hp can carry codes AZV, BKD, BMA, CBAA, CBAB or CFFA — each with different turbo references. The 30 TDI (116 hp) introduces its own codes: DSUD, DTRC, DTRE, DTRF, DXRA, DXRD. Reading the engine code stamped on the block precisely remains the only reliable way to avoid ordering the wrong reference.

Causes of failure and precautions before fitting

On 2.0 TDI engines, variable-geometry turbos are particularly prone to clogging of the turbine vanes — often made worse by EGR or DPF fouling — and to degraded lubrication caused by old oil or a blocked oil return line. The typical symptoms are a gradual loss of power, a characteristic whistling noise, or blue or black smoke on acceleration. Fitting a new turbo without addressing the root cause will invariably lead to another failure: checking the lubrication circuit, flushing the oil feed line, and inspecting the EGR system are prerequisites, not optional extras.
