Two generations, two engine families with different architectures

The first 2.0 TDI engines from 2003 to around 2008 are based on the codes BMM and BMR, unit-injector blocks well known for their susceptibility to crankshaft and connecting-rod issues under high load. From 2008 onwards, Audi switched to Common Rail injection: codes CBDA, CBDB, CBAB, CFHB, CFJA, CEGA, CKFC, followed by subsequent generations introducing the references CUPA, CUNA, CRMB, CRBC, CRLB and DGCA through to 2020. These Common Rail blocks share the same engine capacity but differ in cylinder head, crankshaft, sump and mounting points.

Why power output alone is not enough to make the right choice

A 2.0 TDI 150 hp can correspond to several engine codes depending on the year of manufacture and the generation of the A3 (8P or 8V).
