Reconditioned Hyundai Tucson Gearbox

Tucson 2004–2020: three engine variants, five engine codes and two ways to source the gearbox

Before choosing a gearbox for the Tucson, two questions shape the decision: which generation and engine code is involved, and is the original gearbox still salvageable? Across this model, every engine variant covered here uses a 6-speed manual, but references differ by engine code, and the same engine capacity can conceal entirely different units. Where the original gearbox is available and in a workable condition, rebuilding the customer's own unit produces a reconditioned gearbox from their original part, which is then returned to the same owner — a worthwhile option when the part is difficult to source on an exchange basis, or when the vehicle has an uncommon configuration.

Diesel: D4FD, D4EA and D4HA are not the same gearbox

The 1.7 CRDi is paired with engine code D4FD and is the most widely referenced diesel variant in this collection. The 2.0 CRDi covers two distinct codes: D4EA and D4HA, which correspond to different engine generations present at distinct periods between 2004 and 2020. Mixing up these two codes on the 2.0 is the main identification pitfall: engine capacity alone does not determine the correct gearbox reference.

Petrol 1.6: G4FD or G4FJ depending on the generation

The 1.6 petrol comes with either engine code G4FD or engine code G4FJ, depending on the vehicle's generation. These two units do not share the same gearbox. Checking the engine code directly on the block itself — rather than on the V5C or a generic catalogue — is the only reliable way to avoid a reference error on this engine variant.
