Tucson family SUV vs heavy use: a new turbo that varies by generation and engine

The Tucson is rarely driven like a city saloon. Four-wheel drive, regular loads, occasional towing — this kind of use subjects the turbo to repeated thermal cycles and frequently tests the lubrication system. When the turbo fails — whistling, blue-grey smoke on acceleration, a clear loss of power or the car going into limp mode — the first challenge isn't finding a part; it's identifying the right one from the six engine variants covered here, which share neither the same architecture nor the same manufacturer reference. All the turbos listed here are new, sold without any part exchange.

D4EA, D4FD, D4HA: three diesel families, three distinct turbos

The D4EA covers the first-generation 2.0 CRDi in two power outputs: 113 hp (code D4EA only) and 136–140 hp (codes D4EA, D4EA-F, D4EA-V). Both entries share the same base code, but the F and V variants correspond to internal revisions — do not assume that turbo references are interchangeable without first checking the code stamped on the engine block. The D4FD is fitted to the 1.7 CRDi and 1.7 CRDi 116 hp: the same engine code for both power outputs, but the manufacturer references differ (794097-5003S, 794097-5001S, 28201-2A850 or 282012A800RM depending on the model year). The D4HA is reserved for the later-generation 2.0 CRDi 136 hp and 185 hp — a much wider power range on the same block, which again means distinct turbo references (824168-5002S, M282012A820). Confusing the D4EA with the D4HA on a 2.0 CRDi is the most common ordering mistake.

1.6 T-GDi petrol: a different logic, a different cause of failure

The G4FJ (1.6 T-GDi) is the only petrol engine in this range. Its fixed-geometry turbo operates in a more aggressive thermal environment than lightly loaded diesels. Failures seen on this type of engine are often linked to degraded oil or overdue service intervals, which damage the bearings and the CHRA seals. Before any replacement — diesel or petrol — it is essential to address the root cause: oil filter, lubricant quality, intake circuit sealing, and the condition of the EGR system on CRDi engines. Fitting a new turbo to an engine whose original fault has not been resolved will condemn the part before its time.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Hyundai Tucson Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Hyundai Tucson Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
