11 Mazda models, two sales options: how to choose based on the part and its availability

The choice between an exchange unit and rebuilding your own gearbox is not down to chance: it depends on whether an exchange is available for your reference, the condition of your unit, and the generation in question. On a common model such as the Mazda 3 or 6, an exchange unit is generally available. On rarer models — the RX-8 with its gearbox paired to the 13B-MSP, the BT-50 or B2500 with engine codes WL, WLT and WLAA — rebuilding the customer's own unit makes perfect sense, particularly when no exchange is available for that specific engine code or when the gearbox has a particular configuration that is difficult to source.

MZR-CD, SkyActiv-D, DISI: engine families with distinct gearboxes

The Mazda range covered here spans 1998 to 2021 and brings together several generations of engines. The MZR-CD diesels (1.6, 2.0, 2.2, 2.5) are fitted to the Mazda 3, 6, CX-5, CX-7 and 5, each with distinct engine codes — RF7J, SH, SHY1, SHY4, R2AA, SH-VPTS — which do not necessarily share the same gearbox, even at the same engine capacity. The move to the SkyActiv-D (1.5 and 2.2, codes S5-DPTS 105hp, S5-DPTR, SHY4) introduces a 6-speed manual gearbox that differs from the older MZR-CD units: the two families are not interchangeable. On the petrol side, the 2.3 DISI (L3-VDT) in the CX-7 and the MX-5 gearbox (codes B6ZE, LF-VE, PE-VPS) have their own specific requirements. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier for avoiding a reference error.

5- or 6-speed manual: key points to check by model

The entire range consists exclusively of manual gearboxes, in 5 or 6 speeds depending on the engine and year. On the first-generation Mazda 3 (codes Y6, Y601, Y650, Y655), the 5-speed gearbox is the most common; the following generation switches to 6 speeds with the SkyActiv. The MX-5, a lightweight roadster, uses specific close-ratio gearboxes (codes B6ZE, LF-VE) whose gear ratios differ from saloons of the same engine capacity. For the B2500 and BT-50 pick-up (WL, WLT, WL-C), the gearbox is subject to different load and torque demands than passenger models: this is a point to mention when making an enquiry, as commercial use may point towards a rebuild rather than a standard exchange reconditioned unit rebuilt to 0 km.
