MINI Cooper Gearbox: from the sporty city car R50 (2001) to the F56 (2019) – what intensive urban use really changes

The MINI Cooper is first and foremost a sporty city car, put through its paces in tight urban driving, with frequent short-ratio gear changes and repeated clutch use in stop-start traffic. This pattern of use – very different from that of a grand tourer – accelerates wear on the synchromesh rings and bearings, particularly on the 5-speed manual gearboxes of the early R50/R52/R53 generations fitted with the W10B16 engine, and then on the 6-speed manuals that appeared with the R55 to F56 generations around the N12B16, N16B16 and B38A15A units. Replacing a gearbox worn out by intensive city use is therefore a common scenario on this model.

1.6 petrol: three gearbox families for the same engine capacity

It is on the 1.6 that correct identification matters most: depending on the generation and engine code, the Cooper comes with either a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG. These three types are not interchangeable. The engine code stamped on the block – W10B16, N12B16 or N16B16 – is the deciding factor, as two Cooper 1.6s from the same year can carry gearboxes from entirely different families. The 7-speed DSG is supplied without the mechatronic unit; the dual-clutch assembly is new.

Diesel and 1.5i: 6-speed manual across the board

The 2.0d engines (codes N47C20A, B47C20, B47D20), 1.6d (9HZ / DV6TED4 or N47C16A) and 1.5i (B38A15A, B38A15M0) all receive a 6-speed manual gearbox, but the gearbox references differ depending on the engine. The 1.6d derived from the PSA partnership (DV6TED4) does not use the same transmission as the 1.6d BMW (N47C16A): here again, the engine code takes precedence over simply reading the engine capacity or power output.
