Which gearbox for a 1.6 MINI Cooper engine: W10B16, N12B16 or N16B16?

It depends on the engine code and the generation: these three 1.6 petrol units do not share the same gearbox. The W10B16 is fitted to the early R50 and R53 (2001–2006), while the N12B16 and N16B16 appear on the R55, R56 and R57 generations from 2006 onwards, each with different gearboxes.

Three engine codes, three distinct gearbox families

The W10B16 is paired with a 5-speed manual (references BHA, TBFA, TBHA, type GS5-52BG). The N12B16 and N16B16, being more powerful and more recent, are matched with either a 6-speed manual (GS6-55BG, GS5-65BH) or a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (GS7, reference GS6-55BG-TCJ7). Mixing up the families when ordering is the most common pitfall in this range: the 1.6 engine capacity is identical throughout the 2001–2013 period, but the bell housings, shafts and gear ratios change between generations.

Important note on the DSG 7

The 7-speed dual-clutch version is supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch assembly included. The mechatronic unit, which is frequently the cause of failures on this gearbox in N16B16 applications, is subject to a separate diagnosis and is not included. For the manual versions, the most common symptoms on the W10B16 are stiff gear changes on 2nd and 3rd, made worse by the intensive urban use typical of this model.
