From the 2.0 DTI to the 1.6 CDTI: the Zafira's turbos failed in the same places, but not in the same era

On the Zafira, the history of turbo failures closely mirrors the evolution of the engine range. The first-generation diesel units — Y22DTR (2.2 DTI 125 hp) and Y20DTH (2.0 DTI 101 hp) — suffered mainly from bearing seal failures and damage linked to the quality or regularity of oil changes. On the subsequent CDTI generations (families Z19DT / Z19DTL, A17DTJ / A17DTR, then X20DTH / B20DTH / D20DTH), turbo failure is more often a secondary issue: a clogged EGR alters combustion, accelerates particulate filter blockage and causes boost pressure to rise until the turbo overspeeds or the engine enters limp mode. The classic symptoms are persistent blue smoke on a cold start, a whistling noise at a steady engine speed, or a noticeable loss of torque. Fitting a new turbo without identifying the root cause — carbon build-up, degraded oil, a foreign body upstream — risks a repeat failure in short order.

1.9 CDTI, 1.7 CDTI and 1.6 CDTI: three families, very different references

The 1.9 CDTI (engine codes Z19DT / Z19DTL) covers two power outputs — 100 and 120 hp — which do not use the same turbo: the manufacturer references are distinct, even if the external dimensions appear similar. The 1.7 CDTI (A17DTJ / A17DTR / Z17DTJ / Z17DTR) is a PSA-GM variable-geometry unit whose actuator is particularly susceptible to carbon deposits; the geometry control seizes before the CHRA itself is damaged, resulting in an erratic response and engine under-speed. The 1.6 CDTI (B16DTH / B16DTJ / D16DTJ / D16DTH) is the most recent unit in the range; its turbos are available new, with manufacturer references that must be checked carefully according to the model year.

1.6 SIDI Turbo petrol: fixed geometry, different symptoms

The 1.6 SIDI Turbo petrol versions (A16SHT / B16SHT / A16XHT / B16SHL, 170 and 200 hp) operate on a fixed-geometry principle with a wastegate. Failures here are more commonly linked to hot engine shut-off conditions — oil stagnates in the CHRA and degrades — and to air leaks on the intake circuit. A sharp whistling noise under hard acceleration and blue smoke at hot idle are warning signs that should not be ignored. The references for the two power outputs are distinct: always check the engine code before placing any order.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Opel Zafira Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Opel Zafira Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
