Fiat spans forty years of models and several gearbox families: the reference cannot be read from engine capacity alone

Across the Fiat range, engine capacity alone is never enough to identify the correct gearbox. The same 1.3 Multijet or 1.2 engine can be paired with a 5- or 6-speed manual, or even a Dualogic, depending on the model and production period — the engine code stamped on the block is always the essential starting point.

This guide covers vehicles produced from 1985 to 2024, from the Seicento and Uno through to the latest generations of the Ducato and Talento, taking in the 500, Panda, Doblo, Punto and Tipo along the way. This breadth means a highly varied mix of gearbox families: there is no shared transmission between a Ducato 2.3 Multijet (engine codes F1AE3481D or F1CE3481E, 6-speed manual or Comfort-Matic) and a 500 0.9 TwinAir (312A2000 or 312A5000, 5-speed manual or Dualogic).

Dualogic, DDCT, Comfort-Matic: three mechanisms not to be confused

The Dualogic is a 5-speed manual gearbox operated by an electro-hydraulic actuator — it is an automated manual gearbox, fitted to the 500, Panda and Punto from the mid-2000s onwards. The DDCT (dry dual-clutch) is fitted to certain versions of the recent Tipo and Doblo; it is sold without the mechatronic unit. The Comfort-Matic is an automated gearbox specific to the Ducato, distinct in both design and references. These three types share no components with one another, and none is interchangeable with the manual gearboxes from the same engine range.

Ducato, Scudo, Talento: the heavyweights of the range by volume

The Ducato alone accounts for the majority of references in the range, with the 2.3 Multijet and 2.8 JTD engines spanning several generations (engine codes F1AE0481D, , F1AGL411D, 8140.43S among others). On this heavily used light commercial vehicle, the most common symptoms are stiff gear changes when cold and noises at the gearbox output caused by synchromesh wear. The Scudo and Talento, which share transmission bases with PSA and Renault partners (engine codes R9M, R9M410), require a cross-check of the engine code before any order is placed: PSA and Fiat references carry different part numbers for mechanically similar gearboxes.
