On the Daily 35C, engine code F1CE0481 comes in at least six variants that are not all compatible with the same gearbox

This is the classic pitfall with the IVECO range: a 2.3 Multijet, the same payload rating, and yet the compatible gearbox changes depending on the exact suffix of the engine code. Between a F1CE0481A, a F1CE0481D, a F1CE0481F or a F1CE0481H, internal mechanical developments led IVECO to adapt the gearboxes across the 1999–2019 period. The code stamped on the engine is the only reliable starting point; engine capacity and quoted power output alone are not enough to determine the correct unit.

Three engine variants, two generations of gearboxes

The range covers three diesel units: the 2.8 TD (codes 8140.43, 8140.43C, 8140.43R, 8140.43S), fitted to versions produced before the mid-2000s, the 2.3 Multijet in its many F1CE and F1AE variants, and the 3.0 Multijet (F1CFL411, F1CE3481). The 2.8 TD takes 5-speed manual gearboxes, while the more recent Multijet engines are predominantly fitted with 6-speed manual gearboxes. Cross-referencing the year of manufacture, the full engine code and the commercial model designation — 35C or 70C — remains essential to avoid ordering the wrong reference.

Common weak points on these transmissions

Gearboxes on the Daily in its commercial vehicle role suffer wear primarily on the synchromesh rings of the lower gears and on the selector forks — a direct consequence of stop-start cycles under heavy load. On the 6-speed Multijet units, difficulty engaging 1st and 2nd gear is the most frequently reported symptom before complete failure. The two purchasing options available — exchange and rebuilding your own unit — cater to different situations depending on the condition and availability of the original gearbox.
