4JJ1 or 4JA1-L: two engines, two different turbos on the D-Max

The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to identify the correct turbo for an Isuzu D-Max. The 4JA1-L is fitted exclusively to the 2.5 TD 136 hp; the codes 4JJ1, 4JJ1T and 4JJ1-TC are spread across the full range of 3.0-litre engines, but they are not interchangeable between variants — 3.0 TD 4JJ1, 3.0 DiTD, 3.0 DiTD/DDI or 3.0 D — each having its own manufacturer references. Confusing a 4JJ1 (fixed-geometry turbo) with a 4JJ1-TC or 4JJ1T (variable-geometry turbo) is a common mistake that results in fitting an incompatible part.

Check the manufacturer references before ordering

Each engine variant has its own OEM references. For the 2.5 TD (4JA1-L), the references are centred around part numbers 8971856450, 8972402101 and equivalents. For the 3.0-litre engines, the ranges run from 49477-06200 à 49477-06600 (4JJ1), from 8980115293–8980115297 (4JJ1-TC, DiTD) or alternatively 1515A170, 1515A222 (4JJ1-TC, 3.0 D). Checking your manufacturer reference on the original turbo or in the vehicle's technical documentation is essential: the same commercial designation 3.0 DiTD can correspond to several OEM numbers depending on the year of production or the target market.

Symptoms and causes of failure on these Isuzu diesel engines

On the 4JJ1 and 4JA1-L blocks, the most common causes of turbo failure are engine oil degradation (leading to bearing and turbine shaft damage), oil circuit fouling after an overdue service interval, and air leaks on the intake hose — a problem made worse by the D-Max's off-road use. The characteristic symptoms are blue-grey smoke on start-up or under acceleration, an abnormal whistling noise under load, and a loss of power that can trigger limp-home mode. All turbos listed on this page are brand-new turbos sold as a straight purchase, with no old unit to return. Before any replacement, the cause of the failure must be identified and rectified to prevent rapid deterioration of the new part.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Isuzu D-Max Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Isuzu D-Max Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.

    Engine codes covered: 4JJ1, 4JJ1-TC, 4JJ1T, 4JA1-L
