Why does the turbo fail on the Citroën C4 1.2 THP/PureTech?

On the 1.2 THP and 1.2 PureTech petrol engines fitted to the Citroën C4, the variable-geometry turbo is put under considerable strain by high engine speeds and the direct injection system inherent to these three-cylinder units. Dirty engine oil, oil changes carried out beyond the recommended intervals, or a clogged air filter all accelerate premature wear of the variable geometry and the central bearing. Aggressive acceleration from cold, or switching the engine off immediately after prolonged hard use without allowing a cooling-down period, also increases thermal fatigue on the turbo in these engines.

Symptoms of a failing turbo on this engine

A loss of power under acceleration, an unusual whistling noise, exhaust smoke, or abnormal oil consumption are all warning signs that the turbo on your C4 may be deteriorating. An illuminated engine warning light or the vehicle entering limp-home mode can also indicate a boost pressure fault.

Compatibility of the new turbo for the Citroën C4

This new turbo is compatible with reference 836250-5002S and suits the 1.2 THP 110 and 1.2 PureTech 130 petrol engines, corresponding to engine codes EB2DT and EB2DTS, with an engine capacity of 1199 cm³. Before placing an order, we recommend checking the reference on your old turbo to confirm exact compatibility with your vehicle.

Exchange basis and warranty

This new turbo is sold on an exchange basis: return of the old turbo is required, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions. It is only collected after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted, so your Citroën C4 is not left off the road. The part is covered by a 12-month parts warranty, subject to fitting being carried out by a qualified professional. Payment can be spread across up to 10 instalments.

Advice before fitting the turbo to your C4

Before installation, check the oil circuit (feed and return hoses), the cleanliness of the air filter, and the condition of the intercooler to avoid any contamination of the new turbo. When starting the engine for the first time, prime the turbo with oil to ensure immediate lubrication of the central bearing from the moment the engine fires.
