Tucson I, II and III: 6 engine codes, each with a distinct turbo that must not be swapped

The Tucson has spanned three generations with fundamentally different engine architectures. The first-generation 2.0 CRDi is built around the D4EA block and its D4EA-V and D4EA-F variants, with manufacturer references in the 49173-02412 / 28230-27000 family. The move to the Tucson II brought the 1.7 CRDi D4FD (references 794097-5003S, 28201-2A850) and a revised 2.0 CRDi under engine code D4HA (757886-5003W, 28231-27410), with power ranging from 136 to 140 hp depending on the model year. The third generation broadens the range further with the D4HA in 136 and 185 hp versions (824168-5002S, 28201-2A820) and introduces the 1.6 T-GDi G4FJ, the only petrol engine in the line-up (282312B760 / 282312B810).

    Identification pitfalls across generations

A 2.0 CRDi 136 hp can belong to either the D4EA (gen 1) or the D4HA (gen 2–3): the stated power output alone is not enough to identify the correct turbo. You must cross-reference the engine code stamped on the block with the vehicle's registration date. Likewise, the 1.7 CRDi D4FD and the 2.0 CRDi D4HA from the same generation share the same engine bay but have different variable-geometry configurations: cross-fitting one for the other is not possible without modification.

Symptoms and causes to identify before any replacement

On the D4EA and D4HA diesel blocks, a clogged EGR circuit and a blocked DPF are the primary causes of turbo failure: the resulting back-pressure disrupts bearing lubrication and oil-seal integrity, leading to the characteristic blue smoke and whistling noise. On the 1.6 T-GDi G4FJ, the priority checks are air leaks in the boost hoses and oil quality. Addressing the root cause before fitting a new turbo is essential to its service life: replacing the turbo without first diagnosing the oil-feed and air-intake circuits will invariably lead to another failure.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Hyundai Tucson Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Hyundai Tucson Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
