An SUV that tows, hauls and runs fully loaded: why does the Q5's turbo fail sooner than on a saloon?

The Audi Q5 is used as a versatile family vehicle — often at maximum load, sometimes towing, and regularly on the motorway at sustained engine speeds. This usage profile puts the turbo under continuous strain and amplifies two classic failure causes: lubrication degradation from repeated heat cycles, and fouling of the intake circuit when the diesel particulate filter or EGR system has not been properly maintained. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and correct the root cause — degraded oil, a turbo seal, or a blocked oil feed pipe — otherwise the new unit will be damaged under the same conditions.

Diesel: two generations of 2.0 TDI and two families of 3.0 TDI

On the diesel side, the range covers a broad spectrum. The 2.0 TDI comes in several power outputs and generations: 170 hp (engine codes CAHA, CGLB), 170 and 177 hp (engine codes CAHA, CAHB, CGLA, CGLB, CGLC, CGLD, CMGA, CMGB, CNHC), 190 hp (engine codes CNHA, CNHC, CZJA, DDDA, DETB, DFVA), 163 and 170 hp quattro (engine code CAHA), and versions with no stated power output with engine codes CAGA, CAGB, CAGC. These groups do not all share the same turbo: both the rated power output and the engine code are needed to identify the correct reference. The 40 TDI 204 hp Mild Hybrid (engine codes DFBA, DTPA) is a distinct mild-hybrid architecture with its own turbo reference.

The 3.0 TDI quattro splits into two families: 211 and 240 hp (engine codes CAPA, CCWA, CCWB) on one side, and the more recent 45, 50 TDI and 50 TDI Mild Hybrid versions (engine codes DCPC, DCPE, DMGA) on the other. These two families use variable-geometry turbos of different designs and are not interchangeable.

Petrol: from the 2.0 TFSI to the SQ5's 3.0 TFSI

The petrol engines cover the 2.0 TFSI in several power outputs: 180, 211 and 220 hp (engine codes CAEA, CAEB, CAED, CDNB, CDNC, CFKA, CPMA, CPMB) and a variant with no stated power output (engine codes CAEA, CAEB, CDNB, CDNC, CFKA). Here too, power output alone is not enough: two different engine codes can correspond to turbos with different wastegates or actuators. The SQ5's 3.0 TFSI (engine code CWGD) is a specific supercharged and turbocharged version whose turbo bears no relation to the 2.0 units. Across all these petrol engines, the symptoms of a failing turbo — whistling under load, blue smoke on acceleration, a marked loss of power — can be confused with the high oil consumption that is characteristic of certain engines in this range: an accurate diagnosis (pressure measurement, CHRA inspection) is required before replacement.

New turbos are sold outright, with no unit to return. The 2.0 TDI 170 hp (engine codes CAHA and CGLB) is also available as a reconditioned unit, sold on an exchange basis. EDEN BOITES thus covers the full range of Q5 engines, from the earliest TDI versions to the latest Mild Hybrid variants.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi Q5 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi Q5 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
