Turbo Audi A3: from the 1.8 T of the early generations to the latest TFSI and TDI units, new or reconditioned depending on the reference

On the A3, the purchasing option available depends directly on the engine and the reference in question. The vast majority of turbos listed here are new turbos sold as a straightforward purchase: this applies to almost all petrol and diesel engines, from the 1.4 TFSI to the 2.0 TDI 184, including the high-power 2.0 TFSI variants (280, 286, 300 hp, codes CJXA / CJXB / CJXC / CJXF). Three engines are the exception and offer a reconditioned turbo: the 1.2 TFSI 105 (CBZA, CBZB), the 1.9 TDI 105 (BJB, BKC, BLS, BXE) and the 1.8 T 180 (APP, ARZ, AUQ). For these references, return of the old unit is required.

    Before 2003: the 1.8 T and first-generation 1.9 TDI engines

The A3 8L is built around the 1.8 T (codes AGU, AJQ, APP, AQA, ARX, ARY, ARZ, ATC, AUM, AUQ, AWD) and a broad 1.9 TDI family covering 90 to 130 hp depending on the code (AHF, AJM, ASV, ATD, AUY, BVK, ASZ, ARL for the 150 hp…). Across these engines, power output alone is not enough to identify the correct turbo: several different codes correspond to similar power levels, with either variable or fixed geometry depending on the variant. The 1.9 TDI 130 (ASZ) uses variable geometry, unlike the 90 hp version (AGR, ALH). The 1.8 T 180 hp (APP, ARZ, AUQ) uses a specific turbo that sets it apart from the 150 hp — it is in fact one of the three engines offered as reconditioned on this page.

After 2003: the proliferation of TFSI and TDI families, and the identification pitfalls

The A3 8P and then 8V considerably broadened the range. On the diesel side, the 2.0 TDI appeared in several power outputs (116, 136, 140, 150, 163, 170, 184 hp), whose engine codes and associated turbos are not interchangeable between levels. The 2.0 TDI 116, known as the 30 TDI (DSUD, DTRC, DTRE, DTRF, DXRA, DXRD), is a distinct, more recent family and must not be confused with the 2.0 TDI 140 or 150 from earlier generations. On the petrol side, the 1.4 TFSI also comes in several codes (CAXA, CAXC, CMSA, CMSB, CNVA for the 122/125 hp variants; CMBA, CPVA, CPVB, CXSA, CXSB, CZCA, CZDD for other variants), and the corresponding turbos are not interchangeable. The high-power 2.0 TFSI variants (IS38 for the 280–300 hp) form a category of their own, with a dedicated manufacturer reference and specific equivalents. In all cases, only the engine code stamped on the block allows you to select the correct reference — engine capacity and stated power output are insufficient on a model as diverse as the A3.

Causes of failure and key checks before replacement

On TDI engines with variable geometry, progressive fouling of the vanes (caused by EGR or DPF contamination) is a common cause of power loss or limp-home mode, and is sometimes mistaken for a mechanical failure of the turbo itself. On TFSI and 1.8 T petrol engines, inadequate lubrication — degraded oil or delayed oil pressure build-up — remains the primary cause of bearing wear. Fitting a new or reconditioned turbo without addressing the root cause will invariably lead to another failure. A check of the oil circuit, the lubrication return line and the condition of the intake system is essential before refitting.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi A3 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi A3 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
