From the 1.8 T of the early C5s to the 40 TDI Mild Hybrid of the C8: which turbo for which A6 generation?

The answer depends first and foremost on the generation and engine code, not simply on the engine capacity. The A6 has spanned more than twenty-five years of production across radically different architectures, meaning that the same commercial designation — '3.0 TDI' or '2.0 TFSI' — can refer to several distinct turbos depending on the vehicle's generation.

Diesel: from single turbo to twin-turbo V6

The first diesel A6s were fitted with the 1.9 TDI with variable geometry, available in codes such as AFN, AGR, AHU, ALE, ALH, ASV and AVG depending on output (110 to 115 hp). The 2.5 TDI V6 (150 to 180 hp, codes AFB, AKE, AKN, AYM, BAU, BCZ, BDG, BDH, BFC) also uses a variable-geometry turbine, known to suffer from progressive vane fouling when oil changes are left too long. The move to the 2.7 TDI (163 and 180 hp, codes BPP, BSG, CANB, CAND) introduced a sequential twin-turbo layout. The 3.0 TDI encompasses several engine families and power outputs — 211, 218, 240, 245, 272 hp — with codes ranging from ASB, BKN, BKS, BMK, BNG, BSG through to CDYA, CDYB, CDYC, CDUC, CKVC, CRTD and CRTE. Each power level corresponds to a different turbo reference: two 3.0 TDI quattro units from close model years may not be interchangeable. The 40 TDI Mild Hybrid (codes DFBA and DTPA) introduces electronic turbo management, which requires a strictly matched reference.

Petrol: from the 1.8 T to the 2.0 TFSI across multiple variants

The 1.8 T on the C5 (codes AEB, AJL, ANB, APU, ARK, AWL, AWT) is fitted with a fixed-geometry turbine with wastegate; its typical failure points are the CHRA shaft bearings, often linked to switching the engine off too soon after hard use. The 2.7 T V6 Biturbo (codes AGB, AJK, ARE, BES) uses two separate turbines — the right-hand reference is not the same as the left-hand one. The 2.0 TFSI covers codes CAEA, CAEB, CAED, CDNB, CDNC, CFKA, CPMA for the 180 and 211 hp versions, CYPA for the 252 hp version, and CYMC for the Quattro variant: these codes do not share the same turbo reference despite having an identical engine capacity. The 1.8 TFSI 190 hp (code CYGA) has its own dedicated reference. On petrol engines, an air leak upstream of the compressor or degraded oil remain the primary causes of failure: addressing the root cause before fitting a replacement is essential to avoid a rapid recurrence.

New and reconditioned turbos: what the range offers

The vast majority of references listed here are available as a new turbo (straightforward sale, no old unit to return). Two engines are the exception: the 2.0 TDI 170 hp (codes CAHA and CGLB) and the 1.8 T 150 hp / 180 hp (codes AEB, ANB, APU, ARK, AWL, AWT), for which a reconditioned turbo is also available. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable guide for selecting the correct manufacturer reference from among the A6's many variants.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi A6 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi A6 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
