Symptoms of a failing turbo on the Audi A6 2.0 TDI

On the Audi A6 (C6) fitted with the 2.0 TDI engine, a turbocharger that is nearing the end of its life typically makes itself known through a noticeable loss of power under acceleration, blue or black exhaust smoke, an unusual whistling noise under the bonnet, or the engine warning light coming on with a fault code related to boost pressure. Some drivers also notice excessive oil consumption or hesitation when the engine revs build. As soon as any of these signs appear, it is advisable not to continue driving the vehicle, to avoid causing damage to the engine block.

Fitting advice to protect your turbo

The service life of a turbo on a 2.0 TDI engine depends directly on the quality and frequency of engine oil changes, the condition of the air filter and intercooler, and avoiding high revs immediately from a cold start. Before fitting, check the oil circuit, the intake hoses and the air intake for any contamination or leaks that could damage the new turbo. On first start-up, it is recommended to prime the rotating assembly with oil to ensure immediate lubrication and prevent any dry running at the first start.
