21 engine codes across two engine capacities: the real selection criterion for a turbo on the Audi A1

On the A1, two engine capacities account for virtually all the turbos: the 1.2 and the 1.4, both petrol and diesel. Yet the same 1.4 TFSI can house engines as different as CAXA, CZCA, CHPA or CAVG, and each corresponds to a distinct turbo with its own manufacturer references. A 1.4 TFSI 122 hp (CAXA, CNVA) does not take the same cartridge as a 1.4 TFSI 125 hp (CZCA) or a 1.4 TFSI 185 hp (CAVG, CTHG, CTJA). The power shown on the registration document gives a steer, but it is the code stamped on the engine block that determines the exact turbo.

Petrol: five power outputs, five turbo families

On the petrol side, the A1 spans five distinct outputs. The 1.2 TFSI comes in 86 hp and 105 hp versions (codes CBZA, CBZB, CBZC): this is the only petrol engine on this page for which a reconditioned turbo is available alongside a new one. The 1.4 TFSI 140 hp and 1.4 TSI 150 hp (CHPA, CHPB, CPTA, CZDA, CZEA) represent the most widespread mid-range version, whilst the 1.4 TFSI 185 hp (CAVG, CTHG, CTJA), the S1 version, places greater demands on the turbo and exhibits a different wear profile. On these fixed-geometry, wastegate-equipped blocks, failures typically present as a loss of boost pressure, a whistling noise or a limp-home mode. The most common cause remains insufficient lubrication or degraded oil: addressing this root cause before replacement is essential, otherwise the new turbo will suffer the same fate.

Diesel: 1.6 TDI and 1.4 TDI — two architectures that must not be confused

The 1.6 TDI (CAYB, CAYC, 90 and 105 hp) and the 1.4 TDI 90 hp (CUSA, CUSB, CUTA, CYZA, CYZB) share no turbo whatsoever, despite their similar power outputs. On the 1.4 TDI, codes CUSA and CUSB appear in two separate catalogue entries — 1.4 TDI 90 CV and 1.4 TDI 90 hp — with different associated references depending on the code group: checking the full engine code in its entirety is therefore essential. On diesel blocks, a clogged EGR circuit and the condition of the diesel particulate filter are direct aggravating factors for the CHRA and the turbo bearings; persistent blue smoke after replacement often indicates that the root cause has not been addressed. EDEN BOITES offers new turbos for these diesel engines, with the exception of the 1.4 TDI 90 hp, for which a reconditioned turbo is also available.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi A1 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi A1 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
