Turbo Audi A7: petrol or diesel – does the turbo geometry really differ?

On the A7, the split is clear: three diesel families (the 3.0 TDI in its 211, 218 and 272 hp variants, the 3.0 TDI quattro 272 hp with its engine code CRTD, and the 40 TDI Mild Hybrid with engine codes DFBA / DTPA) versus two petrol families (the 2.0 TFSI quattro engine code CYPA and the 3.0 TFSI / 55 TFSI engine code DLZA). This split has a direct bearing on turbo technology: the 3.0 diesel units are fitted as standard with a variable-geometry turbo, whose movable vanes regulate exhaust gas flow according to load — a system that is under greater thermal stress and more susceptible to clogging than the fixed wastegate geometry used on petrol engines.

3.0 TDI: one engine code alone is not enough to identify the correct turbo

The 3.0 TDI engine family alone covers eight distinct engine codes — CRTC, CRTE, CSWB, CVZA, CZVA, CZVF, CZZA in addition to the CRTD — and each may correspond to a different manufacturer reference. The 059145873… and 907545-5001S series illustrate this complexity: several suffixes (DF, DG, DJ, DK, DL, EG, ER, FE and their V/X variants) coexist within this single range. Mixing up two adjacent codes means fitting a turbo whose actuator and CHRA do not match the original exhaust housing. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable starting point.

    Failure causes by fuel type

On the 3.0 TDI, the variable geometry is the first casualty of a clogged EGR circuit or a blocked diesel particulate filter: the vanes seize and turbo output drops with no warning other than black smoke and a whistling noise under acceleration. On petrol units — the 2.0 TFSI and 3.0 TFSI — oil condition is the critical factor: an overdue oil change degrades the CHRA bearings and compromises turbine seal integrity. In both cases, the root cause must be addressed before replacing the turbo: a new turbo fitted to a contaminated oil circuit or an uncleaned EGR will not last. All turbos listed on this page are brand-new units, sold on a direct-sale basis with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi A7 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi A7 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
