A3 turbocharged: from the 1.8 T of the early generations to the 2.0 TFSI 300 hp, new parts available, reconditioned for three specific references

Across the entire A3 range, virtually all the turbos listed here are new parts, sold as a straightforward sale with no old unit to return. Only three engine variants — the 1.2 TFSI 105, the 1.9 TDI 105 and the 1.8 T 180 — are available reconditioned. This is not an arbitrary choice: for these older or less common references, the original part is sometimes impossible to find new, or its new price simply cannot be justified against the value of the vehicle. Having your own turbo reconditioned makes sense in these cases, particularly on the 1.8 T fitted to the early A3 8L models.

Diesel: 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI — two families not to be confused

The 1.9 TDI covers a wide power range — 90, 100, 105, 110, 115, 130 and 150 hp — with distinct engine codes (including AXRB, BLS, BKC and ATD depending on the generation) that directly determine the manufacturer's turbo reference. The 2.0 TDI ranges from 110 hp to 184 hp, with variable-geometry variants whose actuator may be electric or pneumatic depending on the model year. A 2.0 TDI 140 and a 2.0 TDI 136 carry similar designations but do not necessarily share the same turbo reference: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable guide. The 1.6 TDI, available in 90, 105, 110 and 115 hp on the A3, uses a different turbo map from the 1.9 and 2.0.variable geometry whose actuator may be electric or pneumatic depending on the model year. A 2.0 TDI 140 and a 2.0 TDI 136 carry similar designations but do not necessarily share the same turbo reference: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable guide. The 1.6 TDI, available in 90, 105, 110 and 115 hp on the A3, uses a different turbo map from the 1.9 and 2.0.

Petrol: from the 1.2 TSI to the 2.0 TFSI IS38 — identifying the right generation

On the petrol side, the 2.0 TFSI in 280, 286 and 300 hp outputs — codes CJXA, CJXB, CJXC, CJXF — uses the IS38 turbo with fixed geometry and wastegate, a specific part not found on the 220 hp 2.0 TFSI. The 1.8 TFSI comes in 170 and 180 hp with distinct references. The 1.4 TFSI/TSI 122–125 hp (codes CAXA, CMSA, CAXC) and the 1.2 TFSI/TSI (CBZA, CBZB, CBZC) are covered with new parts. On all these petrol engines, bearing fouling or insufficient lubrication remain the leading cause of turbo failure: degraded oil, a partially blocked feed circuit, or a delay in lubrication after a cold start. Whatever the engine, addressing the root cause before any replacement is essential to avoid damaging the new or reconditioned part within the first few kilometres.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Audi A3 Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Audi A3 Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
