4 engine codes, two turbo configurations: common failures on the Land Cruiser and what they mean

On the Land Cruiser, turbo problems are a recurring issue with the 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV diesel units: oil circuit fouling from carbon deposits, failing turbine seals allowing oil into the intake, and seized variable geometry on versions with movable vanes. The symptoms are characteristic — blue or black exhaust smoke, an unusual whistling sound under load, and a sudden loss of power with no gradual limp-home mode. On the 1VD-FTV V8 4.5 D, the twin-turbo configuration of the 200 Series adds a further complication: a partial failure on one turbo can mask the condition of the second, which then runs under excessive load. Replacing only one turbo on this engine without inspecting the other is a common mistake.

Identifying the correct reference for your unit and series

The engine code is the primary identification criterion. The 2KD-FTV (2.5 D-4D) and the 1KD-FTV (3.0 D-4D) span several generations of Land Cruiser, each with distinct turbo references depending on the year of manufacture and block variant — references 17201-30100, 17201-30160 and 17201-30161 are not interchangeable, even within the same engine code. The 1VD-FTV is fitted to both the 4.5 D V8 in single-turbo form and the 200 Series in twin-turbo form: the configurations differ, and so do the references. The 1GR-FE (4.0 V6 petrol) is the only spark-ignition unit in this range; its turbo follows its own replacement logic, free from the soot fouling and DPF-related constraints of the diesel units.

Address the root cause before fitting

On all these units, fitting a new turbo without having identified the cause of the original failure will lead to rapid re-failure. The most well-documented causes on the diesel Land Cruiser are engine oil degradation (extended oil change intervals, incorrect viscosity oil), fouling of the turbo oil feed pipe, and — on variable-geometry versions — a seized actuator. Flushing the oil circuit and verifying the oil flow rate at the bearing are non-negotiable steps before reassembly. All turbos listed on this page are new turbos, sold as a straightforward purchase, and compliant with original Toyota manufacturer references.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Toyota Land Cruiser Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Toyota Land Cruiser Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
