Why does the left-hand turbo on the Land Cruiser 4.5 D V8 fail more often?

On the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series fitted with the 1VD-FTV engine, the twin-turbo layout makes the compressor on the EGR valve side particularly susceptible to premature fouling. Recirculated exhaust gases laden with combustion particles accelerate wear on the compressor wheel and, over time, cause a loss of sealing — resulting in reduced power, white smoke from the exhaust and excessive oil consumption. Dust ingestion through a poorly sealed intake can compound the problem and speed up deterioration of the turbine shaft.

This new turbo is offered as a replacement for Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles fitted with the V8 4.5 D 1VD-FTV engine, on the intake circuit side corresponding to reference VB37. It is designed to restore the air pressure required for correct operation of this turbocharged engine and to return performance to original specification.

Compatibility with the Land Cruiser 4.5 D 1VD-FTV

This new turbo is compatible with reference VB37, as well as the equivalent references listed below. Before placing an order, it is strongly recommended that you check the reference marked on your old turbo to confirm exact compatibility with your vehicle, as some Land Cruiser 200 Series models may be fitted with different turbos depending on whether they are in the left-hand or right-hand position.

Exchange and Warranty for this Land Cruiser Turbo

This new turbo is sold on an exchange basis: return of your old turbo is required, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions. It is only collected after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted, so your Land Cruiser is not left off the road. A 12-month parts warranty applies, subject to fitting being carried out by a qualified professional. Payment can be spread over multiple instalments, in up to 10 instalments.

Fitting Advice for the V8 1VD-FTV

Before installing the new turbo, carefully inspect the oil circuit (feed and return hoses) to rule out any risk of blockage or leakage, and check the condition of the air filter and intake to prevent any further dust ingestion. Also check the sealing of the hoses connecting the intercooler — a known weak point on this twin-turbo engine. When starting up, prime the turbo with oil before the first engine start, then allow it to idle for a few moments to ensure proper lubrication before placing it under load.
