Unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the Peugeot Rifter joined the family of compact MPVs, building on the foundations of the Partner. As the heart of the drivetrain, its gearbox transfers power from the engine to the wheels. EDEN BOITES outlines the key features of the Peugeot Rifter gearbox and what to do if it develops a fault.
How does the Peugeot Rifter gearbox work?
Engines and transmissions
The Rifter is available with three engine families: the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel (75, 100 or 130 hp), the 1.2 PureTech petrol (110 or 130 hp) and, from 2022, a fully electric version. Drive is sent to the front wheels (four-wheel drive on the 4x4 concept). Petrol and diesel models come with a manual gearbox in 5- or 6-speed form depending on the variant, while the 8-speed EAT8 automatic gearbox has been available since 2018.
Smooth driving to protect the gearbox
With a manual gearbox, keep an eye on engine revs so you change gear at the right moment, press the clutch pedal firmly and release it smoothly. With an automatic, the golden rule is to bring the vehicle to a complete stop before selecting Park or reverse.
What should you do if something goes wrong?
Several warning signs should prompt you to act:
- unusual noises, such as a low rumbling caused by worn bearings;
- a crunching sound when changing gear, indicating worn synchromesh rings;
- difficulty selecting gears, sometimes caused by the linkage or selector mechanism;
- a worn clutch, which may manifest as slipping on pull-away or vibration at neutral.
At the first sign of any of these symptoms, seek professional advice promptly to avoid making the problem worse.
The importance of transmission fluid
Sometimes these symptoms simply point to a low gearbox oil level. Check it with the engine warm, after a few minutes of driving: wipe the dipstick, reinsert it, then check that the level sits between the minimum and maximum marks. If topping up is needed, use the oil recommended by Peugeot and inspect the condition of the seals. Bear in mind that gearbox oil and engine oil are two entirely different products.
Replacing the Peugeot Rifter gearbox
Has your mechanic quoted for a replacement? You don't have to buy a brand-new gearbox. EDEN BOITES offers reconditioned gearboxes, all listed in the Peugeot gearbox collection. Find the reference number stamped on your gearbox or on the oil sump to confirm compatibility. Frequently asked questions
What is the EAT8 gearbox on the Rifter?
It is an 8-speed automatic gearbox, available since 2018. It delivers smooth, comfortable driving thanks to electronic control.
At what temperature should you check the gearbox oil?
Check it with the engine warm, after a few minutes of driving, once the oil has stabilised. The level should sit between the marks on the dipstick.
There's a crunching noise when changing gear – what should I do?
This often indicates worn synchromesh rings. A diagnostic check will establish whether it is a wear issue or simply a lack of lubrication.
How do I find the reference number for my Rifter gearbox?
The reference number is stamped on the gearbox or on the oil sump. If you're unsure, our EDEN BOITES advisers are on hand to help.
