Honda CR-V: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair
Honda CR-V: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Honda CR-V: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

The Honda CR-V gearbox powers the brand's greatest commercial success: an SUV launched in 1996 and considered one of the best-selling in the world. Spanning six generations, the CR-V dropped diesel in favour of a petrol-electric hybrid from 2017, followed by a plug-in hybrid version in 2022. Renowned for its robustness, its transmission still deserves careful maintenance — here is how to go about it with EDEN BOITES.

Under the bonnet of the Honda CR-V: technical specifications

From its very first generation, the CR-V stood out by offering a choice of drivetrain: front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. In front-wheel-drive form, only the front wheels are driven; in four-wheel-drive form, all four wheels receive power, which requires a transfer case to distribute that power between the axles. The gearbox can be manual or automatic depending on the year: five speeds for the most common manual version, up to nine speeds in automatic with the fourth-generation 2.2 L N22B I4 turbo diesel. On the two most recent generations, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is fitted as standard — strictly speaking, this is no longer a conventional gearbox.

Gearbox oil changes for optimum maintenance

Why gearbox oil matters

Also known as transmission fluid, gearbox oil performs three key functions on your CR-V:

  • it lubricates all the components of the transmission system;
  • it helps to dissipate the heat generated while driving;
  • its detergent properties absorb metallic residues and keep the components clean.

It is therefore important to maintain the correct level and use a quality oil. The sump dipstick has two marks between which the fluid should sit; take the opportunity to check its colour. Oil that is excessively black calls for a change. A manual gearbox can go much longer between changes, whereas an automatic gearbox requires more frequent attention.

How to carry out an oil change

With a basic set of tools, the oil change can be done yourself. Secure the vehicle and place a drain tray beneath the oil sump. Unscrew the drain plug, allow the used fluid to drain fully, replace the O-ring and refit the plug. Pour in the new oil using a funnel or a suitable syringe, making sure to choose an oil specifically designed for the transmission — not to be confused with engine oil. Adjust the level using the dipstick, start the engine, cycle through all the gears, then check for leaks before disposing of the used oil at an approved collection centre.

Advanced gearbox faults

If an oil change is not enough, consult a mechanic and describe the symptoms you have noticed. Most problems can be resolved at the garage, but serious deterioration will require a complete gearbox replacement. Our reconditioned exchange gearboxes offer a reliable alternative that is close in quality to new, and if the reference is not in stock, our experts will recondition your existing gearbox after a full strip-down and clean.

The CR-V is not the only Honda to combine versatility with robustness. To compare solutions across the range, see our guides on the Honda HR-V gearbox and the Honda Jazz gearbox. Frequently asked questions

What is the transfer case on the Honda CR-V?

On four-wheel-drive versions, the transfer case distributes power between the front and rear axles. It works alongside the gearbox and requires its own specific checks.

Do recent CR-Vs actually have a gearbox?

The two most recent generations are fitted with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which has no fixed gear ratios. Its maintenance and diagnosis differ from those of a conventional gearbox.

Can I do the oil change myself?

Yes, with a few tools and the correct transmission fluid. If in any doubt, a professional will ensure the right level and the right fluid are used.
