Mercedes-Benz GLE Class: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair
Mercedes-Benz GLE Class: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Mercedes-Benz GLE Class: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

The Mercedes-Benz GLE Class gearbox is a critical component of this luxury SUV, which replaced the imposing ML in 2015. Available as an SUV or a coupé, the GLE embodies modern luxury with a spacious, refined interior. To keep it driving at its best for years to come, it pays to keep a close eye on the transmission. EDEN BOITES shares its expert advice on maintaining, diagnosing and replacing the gearbox in your GLE Class.

Which gearbox does the Mercedes-Benz GLE Class use?

Two generations define the GLE's history: the first in 2015, the second in 2018, the latter introducing an ultra-modern cabin featuring the MBUX system. On the mechanical side, there is something for every driver, from V8 4.0 L and 6-cylinder in-line petrol engines to diesels, plug-in hybrids and AMG models.

Every version of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Class is fitted with the 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox. For the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, two transfer cases are available: one distributes torque equally between the axles, while the other, featuring a multi-disc clutch and electronic control, provides an additional reduction ratio that proves its worth off-road. To learn more about how this component works, see our guide on how a gearbox works.

Servicing and oil changes for the 9G-Tronic gearbox on the GLE

The 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox in the GLE Class uses a hydraulic torque converter. The oil plays a central role: it circulates continuously to dissipate the heat generated during operation and helps remove the metal particles that accumulate over time.

If the gearbox oil is not properly maintained, it degrades and loses its properties. Several problems can then arise on your GLE:

  • Wear to the bearings and gears;
  • Overheating of the transmission;
  • Erratic gear changes;
  • Reduced energy efficiency.

To avoid a breakdown, check the oil level regularly and follow the service intervals recommended by Mercedes. Always use the manufacturer's recommended oil: an unsuitable product can attack the seals and cause a transmission fluid leak. Depending on the year and transmission type of your GLE, it may also be necessary to drain the transfer case, as a failure here can damage the propshaft and affect the 9G-Tronic.

Symptoms and diagnosis of a failing GLE gearbox

Like any mechanical component, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Class gearbox is subject to wear. Certain symptoms should put you on alert:

  • Jerky gear changes;
  • Clunking or grinding noises;
  • A warning light on the dashboard;
  • A drop in oil level or a leak.

These warning signs do not necessarily mean your gearbox has failed. The difficulty lies in the diagnosis: the 9G-Tronic is heavily governed by complex electronic systems, and even a minor fault can produce a variety of symptoms. Only a competent mechanic will be able to properly analyse the fault and determine the appropriate repair.

Repair or replace: exchange vs used on the GLE

Most faults can be handled by your garage. However, on these luxury vehicles, manufacturer original parts are often expensive and quotes can escalate quickly. A complete replacement then becomes the more cost-effective option. Two choices are available: a used gearbox, which is more affordable but whose history is uncertain, and an exchange unit, where the gearbox is stripped, cleaned, its faulty parts replaced, and then tested before dispatch.

To find the right reference for your GLE, please provide your registration number: compatibility depends on the year, engine and transmission type of your vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

When should the GLE gearbox oil be changed?

Follow the service intervals set out in your Mercedes-Benz GLE Class owner's manual and check the oil level regularly. Oil that has turned black or is running low should prompt a visit to a professional.

Is an oil leak serious on the 9G-Tronic?

A leak causes the oil level to drop and exposes the gearbox to overheating. The source must be identified and repaired promptly to prevent accelerated wear to the gears.

How do I choose between a used unit and an exchange unit?

An exchange unit offers a reconditioned and tested product — a good compromise between the price of a used unit and the reliability of a new one. Our advisers will guide you based on the condition of your GLE and your budget.

Can I drive with a gearbox warning light on?

It is best avoided: limp-home mode protects the drivetrain, but driving for an extended period in this state can worsen the damage. Have your GLE Class diagnosed without delay.
