Mitsubishi L200: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair
Mitsubishi L200: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Mitsubishi L200: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

Robust and reliable even in the most demanding conditions, the Mitsubishi L200 will take you anywhere. Yet a problem with the gearbox can quickly spoil things: difficulty selecting gears, crunching on gear changes, oil patches under the pick-up. Every fault has its fix, from linkage adjustment and an oil change through to a full gearbox replacement when nothing else will do. Here is everything you need to know about repairing the gearbox on your L200.

The different gearboxes of the L200

Five generations of L200 have followed one another since the 1980s, and the transmission has evolved accordingly. Models produced between 1986 and 1996 came with a manual gearbox known as the k34. The 1998–2006 generation, identified by the code k74, was supplied with a five-speed manual gearbox regardless of body style (Single Cab, Crew Cab or Double Cab) or engine — petrol or diesel.

The KB4 generation, from 2006 onwards, paired a five- or six-speed manual gearbox depending on the variant, and a four-speed automatic for the 3.5 V6 petrol engine. From 2015, the five-speed manual was dropped in favour of six-speed manuals and a five-speed automatic. Finally, the 2020 model year, fitted exclusively with a 2.2L engine to meet Euro 6 standards, offers either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic depending on the trim level.

What is the right fix for your L200 gearbox fault?

The same symptom can have several causes. Difficulty selecting gears often points to degraded oil — an oil change restores its lubricating properties. The problem may also lie with the synchroniser, which smooths gear changes, or with the clutch rather than the gearbox itself. A proper diagnosis is therefore essential to avoid unnecessary work. A professional — whether a local independent mechanic, a fast-fit centre or a dealer workshop — will assess all the components and confirm whether removal is genuinely warranted, on both manual and automatic gearboxes. They will also be able to give you the exact reference you need before you buy.

A used or exchange L200 gearbox

At EDEN BOITES, manual and automatic transmissions for a wide range of makes are available. Every used unit undergoes a series of checks, while an exchange gearbox offers greater longevity. Should the right reference for your L200 be out of stock, our team can rebuild your gearbox to 0 km, following the specification plan specific to your model.

Frequently asked questions

How do I identify the gearbox on my L200? The code stamped on the gearbox is the most reliable guide; if that is not possible, the generation and engine type will point you in the right direction. The same reference may fit several variants.

If gears are hard to select, does that always mean the gearbox is at fault? Not necessarily: degraded oil, the synchroniser or the clutch may be to blame, which is why a diagnosis is so important.

Used or exchange — what is the difference? A used unit is checked part by part, whereas an exchange unit is fully reconditioned and offers a longer service life.

What if no compatible gearbox is in stock? Your original gearbox can be rebuilt to 0 km, giving you a fresh start on brand-new foundations.
