Gearboxes in the BMW 5 Series
As far back as the 5 Series E28 of 1981, the saloon was fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic. Subsequent generations increased the number of ratios, with the automatic reaching eight speeds on the M5 Competition 625. How to repair the BMW 5 Series gearbox?
Changing the gearbox oil
Whining, crunching, a burning smell, gears jumping out, or a general drop in performance can all point to degraded or insufficient transmission oil. An oil change often resolves these issues. It is typically due at around 60,000 kilometres for an automatic gearbox, and considerably later for a manual.
- Drive for ten to fifteen minutes to warm the oil and improve its flow;
- Raise the vehicle and remove the undertray;
- Place a drain tray beneath the sump, unscrew the drain plug and allow the oil to drain;
- Replace the O-ring seal, refit the plug, then pour in the new oil using a funnel or syringe in the recommended quantity;
- Refit all components.
Drive a few kilometres afterwards to check that gear changes are smooth and that there are no leaks.
