BMW M2: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair BMW M2: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

The BMW M2 gearbox is at the heart of the driving experience in this compact sports car, transferring the power of a high-revving engine directly to the wheels. Launched in 2016 and updated in 2023, the M2 is one of the last sports cars to offer a choice between a manual and an automatic gearbox, with the manual remaining highly sought after by purists. Whichever you drive, a fault can develop at any time. Here is how to diagnose and repair the gearbox on your M2.

What are the specifications of the BMW M2 gearbox?

The first-generation M2 (F87), launched in 2016, came with a 6-speed manual gearbox, fitted to the M2 Coupé 2016 365 hp and the M2 Coupé 2017 370 hp. It was also available with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, found notably on the M2 Coupé 3.0 450 hp and the M2 Compétition Édition Héritage, a model reserved for the French market.

The second generation (G87) is powered by a twin-turbocharged straight-six engine producing 460 hp. The 7-speed gearbox gives way to an 8-speed M Steptronic unit, fitted to the M2 Coupé 3.0i 460 hp BVAS8. For the most committed purists, a 6-speed manual gearbox remains available as an option.

When should you repair the BMW M2 gearbox?

The transmission transfers engine power to the wheels via the gearbox. When it is damaged, driving becomes uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. There are telltale signs to watch out for.

With a manual gearbox, a grinding noise when changing gear can indicate a damaged or seized synchromesh. Difficulty selecting gears may stem from several components:

  • the gear lever;
  • the gear locking mechanism;
  • issues with the pressure plate.

Gears jumping out, the car refusing to start after the clutch is depressed, or an oil leak are also common symptoms. To better understand a gearbox that has become troublesome, read our article why is my gearbox stiff.

If your M2 is fitted with an automatic gearbox, watch out for an unusual delay between gear changes, strange noises in Drive or reverse, or a burning smell often caused by overheating transmission fluid. Oil spots under the car, juddering, or shuddering from the gearbox should also raise the alarm.

What are the steps involved in repairing a BMW M2 gearbox?

To identify the fault, the gearbox components must be carefully inspected. Have a mechanic remove the unit: all the parts will be stripped down and assessed before a diagnosis is made. The most common repairs are:

  • renewing the transmission fluid (top-up or drain and refill) when it is low or contaminated;
  • replacing a faulty torque converter, which can cause a loss of acceleration or vibrations;
  • replacing the synchromesh when there is a whirring noise during gear changes;
  • replacing the clutch when gear changes become difficult or cause juddering;
  • replacing the lip seals responsible for hydraulic leaks and pressure loss;
  • an electronic reset when an electronic fault is the cause.

If these repairs are not sufficient, replacing the gearbox becomes unavoidable. Do you drive another model from the same brand? Read our advice on the BMW 2 Series gearbox and the BMW M6 gearbox.

Frequently asked questions

Is a grinding noise when changing gear serious on a manual M2?

It often points to a damaged or seized synchromesh. A prompt diagnosis prevents the fault from spreading to other gearbox components.

My automatic M2 hesitates before changing gear – why?

This delay can be caused by worn transmission fluid, a faulty sensor, or a pressure issue. Have the gearbox checked to avoid further damage.

Is the M2 still available with a manual gearbox?

Yes. Across both generations, the 6-speed manual gearbox remains available and is greatly appreciated by drivers seeking an engaging driving experience.

Should the entire gearbox be replaced, or just one component?

Only the professional carrying out the diagnosis can make that call. When a full replacement is necessary, a reconditioned exchange gearbox is a reliable and cost-effective solution.

Why choose EDEN BOITES?

When a complete replacement is required, EDEN BOITES offers reconditioned exchange gearboxes, each stripped down, inspected, and tested before sale. You benefit from a warranty of up to 24 months and a satisfaction-or-refund guarantee on the exchange, subject to our Terms and Conditions.
