Chevrolet Monte Carlo: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Chevrolet Monte Carlo: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

The gearbox of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo is a key component of this coupé, launched in 1970 and conceived as an affordable luxury car with a sporting edge inspired by NASCAR racing. From its launch until production ended in 2007, the Monte Carlo went through six generations and featured robust components built to last. Premature transmission wear can, however, affect its performance. EDEN BOITES explains how to keep it in good shape and what to do if a fault develops.

Gearbox Maintenance: Good Habits to Adopt

The Manual Gearbox

On the earlier generations, the Monte Carlo may be fitted with a manual gearbox, which is more susceptible to driver error due to the clutch. Use precise, confident movements:

  • Press the clutch pedal fully down and release it smoothly.
  • Avoid riding the clutch — select neutral when stationary.
  • Don't rest your hand on the gear lever, as this gradually wears the internal components.

The Automatic Gearbox

On the later generations, the transmission is automatic. Never change gear while the vehicle is still moving — do not select P or R whilst in motion, and avoid neutral, which cuts out engine braking.

Gearbox Oil Changes

Whether manual or automatic, changing the transmission oil is essential: this lubricant protects the internal components and dissipates heat. Aim for an oil change every 60,000 km or two years on an automatic, and every 250,000 km or five years on a manual. For more detail, see our guide on how a gearbox works.

Warning Signs to Watch Out For

  • Unusual noises: grinding, clunking, squealing.
  • Stiffness in the gear lever or clutch pedal.
  • A burning smell inside the cabin.
  • Excessive vibrations.
  • Oil leaking beneath the vehicle.
  • A general drop in performance.

At the first sign of a problem, consult a mechanic — the sooner it is dealt with, the less likely it is to spread to other transmission components.
