Mazda B2500: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Mazda B2500: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

The Mazda B2500 is the fifth generation of the B-Series, Mazda's pick-up truck range. Available in single, extended, double or freestyle cab configurations depending on the market, it is aimed primarily at trade customers looking for a straightforward, robust workhorse. Produced from 1998 to 2006, it was succeeded by the Mazda BT-50. The Mazda B2500 gearbox demands maintenance suited to its demanding working life.

Do you own a B2500? EDEN BOITES, specialist in reconditioned gearboxes, is here to help you maintain and repair your transmission.

What makes the Mazda B2500 different

The B2500 is fitted with a 2.5-litre SOHC turbodiesel engine offered in two power outputs: 84 bhp on the 2.5 TD Pick-up 4x4 and 110 bhp on the 2.5 D Plateau Ridelle 4x4. It features a five-speed manual gearbox with either rear-wheel drive or selectable four-wheel drive: the rear wheels are driven as standard, with all four becoming driven when the driver engages the front axle.

The single cab is available in 2WD or 4WD, whilst the Freestyle and double cab receive selectable four-wheel drive with a low-range off-road reduction. All models feature a rear limited-slip differential, providing better traction on slippery surfaces.

What does gearbox transmission oil do on the B2500?

Transmission oil is essential to the correct operation of the gearbox:

  • it lubricates the gears, pinions, bearings and clutch plates to prevent friction;
  • it prevents overheating by dissipating heat from moving components;
  • it keeps the system clean by carrying away contaminants;
  • it protects components thanks to its anti-corrosive properties.

Check the condition and level of the oil regularly using the dipstick on the casing. A manual gearbox like the one in the B2500 requires less frequent oil changes than an automatic, but they remain essential. Our guide on the differences between manual and automatic gearboxes provides further useful information.

A gearbox put to the test by professional use

Built for work, the B2500 is frequently used under load, towing a trailer or tackling difficult terrain. These conditions place considerable strain on the gearbox and clutch, particularly when pulling away on a hill or manoeuvring off-road at low revs. To protect the drivetrain, avoid slipping the clutch to hold the vehicle on a slope, engage four-wheel drive and low range only when stationary or at very low speed as recommended, and allow the engine to reach operating temperature before towing a heavy load. Heavy use makes it all the more important to check the oil level and inspect the seals more frequently, as a leak can go unnoticed more easily on a hard-working vehicle. These precautions will significantly extend the life of the transmission.

How can you tell if the transmission system is failing?

The first sign is difficulty selecting gears, with resistance at the clutch pedal or gear lever. Vibrations may indicate an unbalanced propshaft, a worn flywheel or damaged pinions. A burning smell often points to insufficient oil, whilst a general loss of performance or an inability to change gear indicates serious damage. In either case, contact a mechanic for a proper diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Which gearbox does the Mazda B2500 use?

A five-speed manual gearbox (BVM5), with an automatic gearbox available as an option on certain versions. The gearbox code stamped on the casing confirms the reference.

When should the gearbox oil be changed?

The B2500's manual gearbox requires infrequent oil changes; above all, monitor the condition and level of the oil between scheduled intervals, particularly under heavy use.

Does towing wear the gearbox out faster?

Yes: towing or driving under load increases the stress on the clutch and gears, which is why more frequent checks are advisable.

What if my reference is not in stock?

We can recondition your own gearbox, which avoids any availability issues entirely.
