The default configuration is rear-wheel drive, which sends power to the rear wheels for a more dynamic driving experience. Four-wheel drive is also available: all four wheels are driven, and the gearbox is assisted by a transfer case that distributes power between the axles. Check the oil level and condition periodically using the dipstick markings. A level that is too low may indicate a leak; oil that has turned black signals it is saturated with metallic residue and needs changing. An automatic gearbox requires an oil change every two years or every 60,000 kilometres, whereas a manual gearbox, being more robust, typically only needs attention every five years or so. How to carry out an oil change on the E-Class
You can carry out this oil change yourself with a basic set of tools:
- Check that the oil is compatible with your transmission system;
- Secure and raise the vehicle;
- Place a drain pan under the sump, unscrew the drain plug and allow the oil to drain fully;
- Refit the drain plug, open the filler cap and pour in the new oil using a funnel, observing the dipstick level markings;
- Let the engine warm up, select every gear (including reverse) and check for any leaks on the ground.
