Designed to rival the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, the Porsche 918 Spyder is a plug-in hybrid hypercar produced between 2013 and 2015. It combines a 4.6-litre V8 petrol engine producing 610 hp with two electric motors delivering 123 hp and 142 hp respectively, proving that performance and efficiency can go hand in hand. To transfer this exceptional powertrain to the wheels, Porsche chose its renowned PDK automated dual-clutch gearbox. The Porsche 918 Spyder gearbox is well worth a closer look — EDEN BOITES takes you through this precision technology.

A hybrid architecture built for performance

Part of the 918 Spyder's mechanical DNA comes straight from motorsport: its V8 is derived from the Porsche RS Spyder. The front electric motor drives the front wheels exclusively and operates up to 265 km/h; beyond that speed it decouples, leaving the rear wheels to propel the car alone. The seven-speed PDK automated gearbox is fitted to every 918 Spyder and is integrated into the all-wheel-drive system. It is connected to both the combustion engine and the rear electric motor, while the front motor drives the front wheels via a single-ratio transmission.

How the PDK gearbox works

PDK stands for Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, meaning "Porsche dual-clutch transmission". Its internal structure is that of a manual gearbox, but it uses two clutches instead of one, with the whole system controlled electronically. The first clutch handles even-numbered gears, the second handles odd-numbered gears: while one engages a gear, the other is already preparing the next. The driver can choose between a manual mode, where they control gear changes, and an automatic mode.

Maintaining the PDK

Mechanical maintenance

The gearbox requires clean transmission oil at the correct level. An oil change may be needed approximately every 180,000 km. The PDK also uses a hydraulic fluid, which should be changed around every 90,000 km; checking and topping up this fluid requires a specific tool. Take the opportunity during these services to replace the filters as well.

Electronic system maintenance

Periodic calibration — allowing the electronics to relearn driving data — is recommended, particularly after an oil change or a component replacement. It is also advisable to keep up with software updates for the gearbox, which can correct potential bugs, introduce new functions, reduce wear and keep the unit in sync with the rest of the vehicle. These operations require the official diagnostic tool.

Repair or replace the gearbox?

In the event of a minor fault — an electronic issue or a worn component — a specialist can step in: replacing sensors or clutches is often a manageable job. The process begins with removing the gearbox, after disconnecting all wiring and pipes, followed by inspection and replacement of the faulty part, and a functional test. However, if the gearbox is severely damaged, replacement is frequently the safest solution, as repair does not always offer the same level of reliability. Frequently asked questions

Which gearbox does the 918 Spyder use?

A seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automated gearbox, integrated into the hypercar's all-wheel-drive system.

How often should the PDK be serviced?

The transmission oil change is due around 180,000 km and the hydraulic fluid change around 90,000 km, to be confirmed based on usage and Porsche's recommendations.

What is gearbox calibration?

It is a process by which the electronics relearn driving data, recommended after an oil change or a component replacement, in order to maintain optimal gear changes.

Repair or exchange?

A minor fault can be repaired. In the case of serious internal damage, a reconditioned exchange gearbox offers a better guarantee of reliability.
