Produced from 1992 to 1995, the Porsche 968 holds a pivotal place in the manufacturer's history. Its turbocharged four-cylinder engine – regarded at the time as a jewel of sophistication and rooted in motorsport – produces between 240 and 305 bhp. Yet it is above all in the transmission that the 968 marks a turning point: it is both one of the last Porsche models to use a transaxle layout and one of the first to receive a Tiptronic gearbox. EDEN BOITES is here to help you understand the Porsche 968 gearbox and keep it in top condition.

Innovation meets tradition: two gearbox options

The transaxle configuration places the gearbox on the rear axle, connected to the front-mounted engine by a propshaft that runs the full length of the vehicle. The 968 was offered with two transmissions:

  • the four-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox, available as an option on all models, operates via a hydraulic torque converter and allows manual control through the gear lever or a steering-wheel paddle;
  • the six-speed Getrag G44 manual gearbox, designed specifically for the 3.0-litre engine, fitted both the 968 3.0 with 240 bhp and the 968 3.0 Turbo S with 305 bhp.

Gearbox maintenance guide

The good news is that neither the Tiptronic nor the Getrag G44 requires complex maintenance. The essentials are keeping the transmission fluid in good condition and maintaining the correct level. A straightforward fluid change will resolve contamination issues; if the level is low, simply top up with the correct fluid after checking the reference. The transaxle layout also means the propshaft should be inspected regularly: it must not be subjected to sudden tension or excessive slack, and adjustment may occasionally be needed.

Repairing the gearbox in four steps

If a fault develops, it is strongly advisable to entrust the repair to an experienced mechanic. If you have the tools and the expertise, the job follows four steps.

Gaining access to the gearbox

As the gearbox is at the rear, start by raising the car and supporting it securely on axle stands. Follow the propshaft from the engine to locate the gearbox, then remove any components obstructing access.

Removing the gearbox

This is the critical step: disconnect all connections, including the propshaft, undo the bolts, then carefully withdraw the gearbox. It may also be necessary to remove the propshaft, taking care to keep the engine stable as you do so.

Diagnosing and resolving the fault

Inspect every seal for signs of leaks and every component for signs of wear. Once the faulty part has been identified, replace it.

Reassembling and testing

Refit the gearbox in its original position, reconnect everything, take care with the propshaft adjustment, then road-test the vehicle.

Replacing the 968 gearbox

There are several situations where replacement is preferable to repair: advanced wear, components damaged by impact, or a repair that is more involved than a straight exchange. Frequently asked questions

Which gearboxes does the Porsche 968 use?

An optional four-speed Tiptronic automatic and a six-speed Getrag G44 manual, both mounted at the rear in a transaxle layout.

Does the 968 require a lot of maintenance?

No: monitoring the transmission fluid, changing it if it becomes contaminated, and checking the propshaft is generally all that is needed.

Can I repair the gearbox myself?

It is possible if you have the required tools and expertise, following the removal and inspection steps, but the job is a delicate one and is best left to a professional.

When should I consider an exchange?

In the event of advanced wear, impact damage, or a repair that is too involved, a reconditioned gearbox on an exchange basis is a reliable solution.
