Volkswagen Arteon: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair
Volkswagen Arteon: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Volkswagen Arteon: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

A four-door coupé unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show and sold until 2024, the Volkswagen Arteon succeeded the CC with generous proportions — 4.87 m long and a 2.84 m wheelbase. Elegant and dynamic, it owes much to its gearbox, whose condition directly affects both driving pleasure and longevity. Here is EDEN BOITES' advice for effective maintenance.

Manual or DSG: the Arteon's transmissions

The Arteon was offered with three main engine families. On the petrol side, a 1.5 TSI Evo producing 150 bhp and a 2.0 TSI available in 190, 280 or 320 bhp. On the diesel side, the 2.0 TDI offered in 150, 190 or 240 bhp. Finally, a plug-in petrol hybrid pairs a 1.4 TSI of 156 bhp with an 85 kW electric motor, for a combined output of 218 bhp.

Depending on the version, the Arteon comes with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. These two architectures have different servicing requirements: our comparison of manual and automatic gearboxes will help you tell them apart. Our full range of gearboxes is available in our catalogue.

Juddering and jerking: possible causes

Juddering or jerking under acceleration or deceleration can have several causes:

  • synchronisation problems that hinder gear engagement;
  • wear of internal components such as bearings or gears;
  • an insufficient oil level or degraded transmission fluid;
  • on DSG versions, a malfunction of the electronic system controlling the dual clutch, causing hesitation during gear changes.

Spotting these symptoms early reduces the risk of further transmission damage.

How often should you change the gearbox oil?

The interval depends on the type of transmission. For a manual gearbox, an oil change is generally recommended every 55,000 to 80,000 km. For an automatic gearbox, the interval extends to between 120,000 and 150,000 km. These figures vary with usage: a driver who regularly pushes their Arteon in heavy traffic, with heavy loads or in extreme climates, would benefit from more frequent oil changes. Your vehicle's service manual and the advice of a qualified mechanic remain the best references.

The gearbox warning light comes on: what should you do?

A gearbox warning light should never be ignored. It may indicate overheating, an electronic fault in the management system (faulty sensor, wiring, or ECU) or an insufficient fluid level caused by a leak. In this case, it is advisable to reduce speed, pull over safely, avoid driving on if the warning light remains on after the unit has cooled, and have a diagnostic carried out. Keeping to the recommended oil change intervals helps prevent these warnings from occurring.
