Fiat gearboxes and engines: from the 2.5 TD of the 1980s to the 2.3 Multijet of recent generations — which part fits which version?

The answer depends above all on the engine code stamped on the block, not simply on the engine capacity shown on the registration document. Two Ducatos both badged "2.3 Multijet" may carry a F1AE0481D or a F1AE3481D depending on the year of first registration and the applicable Euro emissions standard, and these two codes do not share the same gearbox or the same reconditioned bare engine.

The Ducato alone accounts for the majority of the gearboxes listed here, which reflects the reality of the fleet: this van covers high mileage and puts its transmissions under considerable strain. You will find 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes matched to the 2.3 Multijet, 2.8 JTD, 3.0 Multijet and 2.2 Multijet engines, as well as the Comfort-Matic — an automated manual gearbox supplied without its actuator. For passenger cars, the 500, Panda and Punto account for the bulk of demand for petrol gearboxes (1.2, 1.4, 0.9 TwinAir) and for Dualogic transmissions — automated single-clutch units, also supplied without the actuator. The Tipo, Doblo and Talento extend the range to cover 1.6 Multijet and 1.9 JTD applications.

Common identification pitfalls with Fiat engines

The 1.3 Multijet (engine code 188A5000 or 199A2000 depending on the generation) is fitted to the Panda, Doblo and Fiorino alike, but the gearbox bell housing dimensions differ according to the torque transmitted. The 0.9 TwinAir (250A1000 or 312A2000) comes in two bell housing variants depending on whether or not the gearbox is fitted with the Dualogic control system. On the Ducato, the switch from the 2.8 JTD (8140.43S) to the 2.3 Multijet was accompanied by a change of bell housing: a gearbox from an 8140 block cannot be fitted to an F1AE without an adapter. Finally, the Talento shares several engine references with the Trafic III (R9M, R9M410, R9M413), which can mistakenly lead you towards a part that falls outside the correct scope. Checking the full engine code remains the only reliable method before placing any order.
