The answer is almost always found in the four to six characters stamped on your engine block. On the BMW X5 and X6 fitted with the M57D30 (306D3), the N57D30, N57D30A, N57D30B or the B57D30, the associated transfer case differs depending on the generation of the powertrain, even at the same engine capacity (3.0d). The N55B30A and B58B30A (petrol versions) follow the same logic on the X4, 5 Series and 6 Series.
